The Supreme court today freed Bode George, former chairman of National Ports Authority, NPA of corrupt charges. The chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was jailed for two years following the verdict of Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Lagos High court, which found him guilty of corrupt charges over transactions that took place at the port authority while he was the helms man.
But after serving his sentence, George appealed the verdict but the judgment of the lower court was confirmed at the Court of Appeal. He however, went to the Supreme Court, which upturned the verdict, giving him a clean bill of health. The supreme court justices led by John Fabiyi said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC had no evidence to commit George, while insisting that the charge of "contract splitting" filed against the man was unknown to law.
